Top Gun Phoenix Custom Helmet

This Top Gun Phoenix custom helmet was laid out for a very special Christmas gift. Dave Reuser from Petaluma, California, wanted to surprise his daughter Maddie with a Top Gun Phoenix custom painted helmet. Dave and Maddie both love skiing and are big fans of the movie Top Gun. A few years ago, I did a custom painted Top Gun helmet for Dave that looked like Iceman’s helmet from the first movie. Maddie thought it was super cool and said it would be fun to have her own Top Gun Phoenix helmet one day. Maddie forgot she even said that, but her dad didn’t forget. Dave called me six months before Christmas to be sure we nailed it on this special custom ski / snow helmet just for her.

I was really excited to work on this custom painted skiing helmet. Dave started with a Bolle ski custom helmet that was strong, light, and ready for snow. Then we began the process of custom ski helmet painting, turning it into a sharp, bold, one-of-a-kind gift. The goal was to make it look just like the helmet worn by Phoenix in the Top Gun 2 movie. I used my best helmet airbrushing tricks to create the design.

The helmet had to match the Top Gun look, with clean lines, bold colors, and sharp detail. I made sure to add the same playing cards and name marks just like the real Top Gun Phoenix helmet. I used bright reds,  and crisp white on black to match Phoenix’s helmet style.  All of this was done with careful custom helmet painting and accurate masking, and placement, so it looked just like a real Top Gun Phoenix replica helmet.

I used my favorite PPG clear coat to protect the whole design, so the helmet would stay strong and smooth in the snow, after 3 heavy coats, color sanded in between each. That’s one of the most fun parts of helmet painting—making the clearcoat look flat and perfect. With every part done with care, this custom painted helmet became a perfect mix of movie magic and skiing fun.

Once the entire process was done, this custom airbrushed snow helmet was ready for delivery. Dave was so happy with how it turned out. He said it looked even better than he imagined. And on Christmas morning, Maddie opened the box and was totally surprised. She couldn’t believe her dad remembered what she said and had a real Top Gun Phoenix helmet replica done just for her. She loved it and couldn’t wait to wear it on their next ski trip.

This airbrushed snow helmet was more than just gear—it was a memory. It was a sign of how much her dad cared. It was a cool gift, full of love, snow, and a little bit of jet power. Now Maddie has a ski snow custom painted helmet that is just for her. Every time she wears it on the mountain, she will feel fast, strong, and like Phoenix I hope…

I love custom helmet airbrushing projects like this.  All of the Top Gun themed helmets that I have done, which is probably 12 plus, they always give me an excuse to watch at least one of the two Top Gun movies while I and sanding and painting them.  Custom painted helmets can tell stories if you ask about them. This Top Gun Phoenix custom painted helmet told a great story of a dad and daughter who ski together and love fast movies. It showed how custom painted helmets can bring joy and make memories. Whether it’s a custom painted skiing helmet, a custom ski helmet, or a Top Gun Phoenix helmet, each one is made with care and heart. That’s why I love helmet painting and always will.
