Superman Custom Painted Helmet
This custom painted helmet was made just for Thomas Lipnicki from New Jersey, who is a huge Superman fan. He wanted a Superman custom painted helmet that would stand out on the road and show off his love for the strongest creature on the planet. We took a Shoei RF1300 and turned it into a one-of-a-kind custom painted Superman theme helmet using detailed helmet painting and helmet airbrushing. This custom helmet painting project was all about them colors, sharp lines, and super clean details. Thomas had a few ideas for a newer style of Superman, and we used those preferences to guide the design. He didn’t want an old-school or retro look—he wanted a modern, strong Superman style. So that’s exactly what I airbrushed into the design.
This custom painted helmet featured a bold red and blue color scheme, just like Superman’s suit. The front and sides of the custom airbrushed Superman helmet had sharp streaks of red and yellow lightning to add motion and power. The back had the classic Superman “S” shield, painted in bright red with a gold background, done using high-end helmet airbrushing to give it some depth. During Thomas’s first ride through the Black Hills of South Dakota, he said he got a lot of stops and questions. This ride was the first time anyone saw the helmet on the street, and people couldn’t stop looking. The custom painted street helmet got attention at every stoplight.
One cool thing about this street bike custom painted helmet was the clean pinstriping around the Superman logos and the graphics… white helps usually. All of this was sealed under a PPG Envirobase clear coat to give a show finish, after color sanding in between coats, a protection for decades… Quality AND perfection. That’s what makes custom painted helmets like this one special. The paint doesn’t just look good—it lasts. It’s protected with the same kind of materials I use on race cars, regular used vehicles, and custom bikes.
This Superman custom painted helmet… or motorcycle airbrushed helmet, per Thomas’ preferences, was used on the street, rather than the track. A street bike custom helmet, and it looks awesome with the rest of his bike setup. Whether he’s riding to work or heading out for a weekend trip, his helmet shows off his style. Not everyone wants a simple black and white helmet. Some riders, like Thomas, want their helmet to tell a story. And this one tells the story of a hero—Superman.
The whole custom helmet airbrushing process takes a lot of time. Disassembly and cleaning. Sanding and prepping for paint. Primer, more sanding, sketching, painting, airbrushing, and layering. Then the clear coating three times with sanding in between for a show finish… Every step was done by hand as always to make sure the final custom painted Superman helmet looked near perfect.
We’ve done a few Superman designs, but this custom painted Superman helmet was a pillar of others of a new-school comic style that Thomas asked for. It was a fun challenge to make it look strong and cool at the same time.
In the end, this custom street helmet turned out amazing. Thomas was thrilled when he opened the box. He sent us photos from the road, showing the helmet shining in the sun. A great piece of custom motorcycle painting, and a super way to ride.
