Another Josh Herrin helmet, a custom painted helmet done for pro Superbike racer Josh Herrin, and one of the coolest designs done for him to this point. Josh has had many custom painted helmets from us, and this was about the fourth or fifth time we’ve worked together. Every time, Josh gives us fun and wild ideas to bring to life through custom helmet painting and detailed helmet airbrushing. This custom painted Josh Herrin helmet was made to match his bold style and colorful racing personality. Josh always wants his special “three-eyed smiley face” design on top of the helmet, and we made sure to include it again—big on top of the lid.

I added lots of heavy metallic flake across the top and sides. Over the flake, airbrushed in a deep candy red, which looked deep in the sun and made the helmet stand out a bit more if seen in the direct sunlight.  Josh always makes helmet painting fun with his ideas and take on direction…

Josh also wanted to make this custom painted street helmet a little more personal. He asked us to add his son to the design. So on the back of the custom airbrushed Josh Herrin helmet, I added an image of his little boy wearing a crown. It made the helmet feel extra personal and special and showed that even a hard dude has a soft side for family. That’s what makes custom painted helmets so fun—every rider gets something unique and personal.

When making a street bike custom helmet for a professional racer like Josh, we also have to think about sponsors. His sponsors, like Fresh N Lean and Arai, needed their logos in their paid locations on the lid. We saved space on the helmet to make sure all the sponsor logos were clear and in the right spots. That gave us just half of the helmet to work with for design space, but we still made it look balanced and full of cool features. Even with the space limits, the custom painted sport bike helmet turned out great.

The process started with a clean Arai helmet, which is what Josh wears… After cleaning and prepping it, we started laying out the shapes and artwork. With custom helmet airbrushing, we added all the smiley faces, flakes, and shading by hand. We used high-quality HOK and PPG paint and lots of layers of clear coat color sanded in between for the finish. The final result was strong, stunning—a perfect mix for the  professional speed machine that is Josh.

This custom sport bike helmet is not just for racing. It’s also a great custom street helmet that will eventually be retired into a wall trophy. It shows off Josh’s fun personality and reminds people of who he is, both on and off the track. This street bike custom painted helmet is bold, bright, and totally one-of-a-kind.
