Italian Custom Painted Helmet

This Italian custom painted helmet was one of the most detailed projects I’ve worked on this year. It was a special custom painted Italian theme helmet made to show the beauty and style of Italy. Executed helmet painting fast — so it could be shipped all the way to Rome for a big event. This Italian helmet was painted completely by hand using top-level helmet airbrushing and pinstriping.  Too many hours to count. As always, no vinyl —everything was done with care, one detail at a time, paint, by hand.

This custom airbrushed Italian helmet tells a story. It shows everything that makes Italy special. The colors of the Italian flag—red, white, and green—are used all over the helmet. It also shows things like famous buildings, art, and symbols from Italy. The paint design had so much detail that pictures just can’t show it all. You really have to see this custom Italian helmet in person to understand how wild it’s finish is. It’s one of those custom painted helmets that feels more like a piece of art than a moto helmet.

This helmet was made for off-road riding, so it’s also a strong and safe dirt bike custom helmet, which is meaningless because now it is just a trophy in a museum.  That’s the fun of custom helmet painting—you can custom paint and dump dozens upon dozens of hours into a helmet that if worn, could be destroyed in an hour.   But always then hung up as a trophy that can tell a tale. This was a full custom painted MX helmet, perfect for motocross or enduro riders who also love Italy or are Italian. It was designed to be worn during riding, but it could also sit in a museum—it’s that detailed and prepped correctly, and finished correctly.  Durable.   The way paintwork should be.  Which most custom painters haven’t figured out.  Get it out the door and it’s gone.   Not my motto.  Prep it right.  Finish it the right way.  Twenty plus years of trial and error of caring, and knowing, no one has written these rules down when it comes to heavy roost and rock damage and true durability.

We used custom helmet airbrushing techniques to give the helmet smooth blends of color and fine shadows. The airbrushed helmet shows landmarks like the Colosseum and famous Italian artwork. It even had little details like olive branches, grapes, Italian racing stripes, and gold trim. This wasn’t just a custom painted Italy helmet, it was a helmet that showed heart, history, and heritage. A true Italian themed helmet from top to bottom.

Whether you call it a custom painted dirt helmet or an offroad custom painted helmet, this project proves that great helmet painting can make any idea come to life. Every part of the helmet told part of Italy’s story. And it was sent all the way to Rome, where people could see it in person while clear coat fumes were still gassing out when they openend it.  It was a proud moment to know our paintwork was being shown in one of the most historic places in the world.

I’ve painted lots of custom painted helmets over the years, racing helmets, street bike helmets, and snow helmets, MX helmets, everything you can imagine—but this custom painted Italian helmet is one I’ll never forget. It took skill, focus, and a deep love of design.   And weeks of dedication, waking up every day knowing the next step… Italy is full of beauty and history, and it was my goal to show that through this one-of-a-kind Italian helmet.

This as full custom painted motocross helmet, a Troy Lee Designs brand helmet, although it looks super wild and complex and a trophy you don’t want to touch, it can handle the track just fine. That’s what makes custom painted MX helmets so cool—you can wear them, race with them, and still turn heads while doing it. People won’t forget seeing this custom painted Italy helmet fly by if worn.  It won’t be worn…   but if it happened to be, eventually it will look even more kick ass on the wall as a trophy with some battle scars.

In the end, this custom painted helmet is one of my favorites. It shows what can be done with good ideas and great helmet airbrushing. Whether it’s a custom Italian helmet or any other kind of theme, we love telling stories through paint. That’s what makes custom helmet painting so much fun. And this Italian themed helmet? It was truly bellissimo.
