Custom Painted Welding Helmet

This custom painted welding helmet was custom painted and airbrushed for David Granik, of Alabama. David worked for over 40 years for SS&A design collective, and his friends and colleagues wanted to surprise him with a very special gift for his retirement. They asked for a custom painted welding helmet, something that would show one of the things David loves, trains and locomotives.

David loves to study old trains, and locomotives. His favorite ones are the ALCO-RS1, the ALCO-C636, and the EMD-GP7. So, for this custom helmet painting project, we put all three of those trains right on the helmet. Every engine was painted with care.

We started with a Lincoln Viking 3350 ADV welding helmet, which is one of the best welding helmets out there. This one was was perfect for helmet airbrushing, all the paint, no stickers or vinyl. Everything you see is hand-painted, as always.

Before painting, I had to do some homework. I studied all three locomotives so I could see what made them special. Each one has its own look, shape, and some specific recognizable and famous ones had specific paint schemes. That way, I could be sure David would recognize them on his new custom painted welding helmet.

The colors we used were bright and bold. We added layers of candy paint, which shines in the sunlight. Underneath, we used ice white paint to help the colors pop. This makes the welding custom helmet look amazing when it catches the light.

This was a true custom airbrushed welding helmet. It also has special touches that were added just for David. On the front, we painted his name, the logo of his company SS&A Design Collective, and a surveyor, which is another thing David enjoys.

This custom painted welding mask is not just useful—it’s also a piece of art. Whether David is working or just showing it off, people are sure to notice it. It’s one of the most fun and detailed custom painted helmets for welding we’ve done.

The design is all about trains, so we called it the custom locomotive helmet or a custom painted train welding helmet around the shop.  Every part of this airbrushed train themed helmet was made with David in mind.

This custom painted Viking welding helmet is one of a kind. It’s not just cool to look at—it’s also really trick and built for real work. David can wear it proudly while welding, knowing it shows off his love for trains and his long career.

From start to finish, this custom helmet airbrushing project was a joy to work on. Bob Snider helped by sharing ideas and details about what David liked. That made it easier to design something really personal and meaningful.

David didn’t know he was getting this helmet, so it was a big surprise. His team gave it to him as a retirement gift, and from what I heard, he loved it. It’s always special to see someone smile when they get a gift made just for them.
