Custom Painted Evel Kneivel Helmet
Custom Painted Evel Kneivel Helmet
A Tribute to a Legend – The Custom Painted Evel Knievel Replica Helmet -project
Some projects carry more than just paint—they carry legacy. That was the case with this custom painted Evel Knievel helmet, created for Dan Brouillard of Port Orchard, Washington. Dan is more than just a fan. He’s an Evel enthusiast, a true old-school biker with a deep love for classic Americana and a serious collection of Evel Knievel memorabilia. When he reached out to have me create a replica helmet just like Evel’s, I knew it was going to be special.
I’ve done a lot of Evel Knievel replica helmets over the years, but this one had an extra level of detail and meaning behind it. Dan didn’t just want something close—he wanted a custom Evel Knievel helmet that looked exactly like the one Evel wore back in the day, but with a cleaner, sharper finish using modern painting techniques. And that’s exactly what I set out to do.
We started with a retro-style helmet to match the old-school vibe of the original. Evel wore helmets that had a very specific shape and feel, so the base model mattered. Then came the technical part—filling in the snap holes, sanding, and shaping to give it that smooth, seamless look that matched Evel’s famous lid. From there, it was all about helmet airbrushing, detail work, and historical accuracy.
The original helmets from the 70s weren’t exactly perfect. Most were covered in decals and mass-produced details. But for Dan, I wanted to take the classic look and enhance it with high-quality custom helmet painting. That meant painting in the red, white, and blue color scheme by hand, complete with stars and bold stripes. The result? An airbrushed helmet that looked better than the original—true to the design, but far cleaner and more durable.
One of the standout features was the gold-leafed “EVEL” across the forehead. This detail is what really tied the whole design together. That gold sparkle brought authenticity and a premium touch to the custom painted helmet, instantly drawing the eye and giving it that star-quality shine.
Dan was thrilled with how it turned out—and honestly, so was I. He added the custom painted Evel Knievel helmet to his already impressive collection, alongside a couple of other pieces I made for him: a retro “Easy Rider” clock and a mini Evel-themed clock. Both are now in my gallery, and seeing them all together is seriously cool.
What makes this Evel Knievel custom helmet so special isn’t just the paint. It’s the nostalgia. The helmet stands for a time when daredevils ruled the world and crowds held their breath during every ramp jump. It’s bold, simple, and unforgettable—just like Evel himself. The use of modern urethane paint and clear coat ensures this helmet will last far longer than the originals and look even better.
This custom airbrushed Evel Knievel helmet is one of my favorite pieces. It’s not just a replica—it’s a tribute. A celebration of a true American legend, created with precision, heart, and respect for history. Every line, every stripe, every star was painted with purpose.
If you’re ever lucky enough to see Dan’s collection in person, look for the custom painted Evel Knievel helmet that sparkles with gold, bursts with patriotic color, and proudly honors a man who flew through the air with unmatched courage. And if you ever need your own custom helmet airbrushing, you know where to find me.
This project reminded me why I do what I do. Helmets like this keep history alive—and there’s nothing cooler than that.
