Watchmen Smile Custom Painted Helmet

This Watchmen Smile custom painted helmet was the first of many paintjobs I did for Awesome Bill of Reno, Nevada…   who later became one of my best friends over the years, to only be murdered by his beloved girlfriend, in the back with a 12 gauge,  whom I also painted several helmets for, as gifts from Aaron, AKA “Bill”…    A big fan of Watchmen, Bill (Aaron)  originally came to me in around 2011 with the idea of creating a helmet that would bring the Comedian’s iconic smiley face logo to life. He wanted his custom painted motorcycle helmet to capture the dark humor and gritty style of the character while turning heads on his street bike. This project was not just another custom helmet painting—it was a bold statement on two wheels.   AND, it was F**ckin Aaron.  Awesome Bill from Dawsonville.

We started with a Shoei RF-1100 as the canvas for this custom Watchmen helmet. Using precise helmet airbrushing, recreating the Comedian’s smiley face logo on the front of the helmet, complete with its signature bullet holes and dripping blood. Bill wanted extra detail, so we enhanced the design with additional blood splatter and realistic entry and exit wounds. The effect was intense and striking, making the smiley face custom painted helmet truly unique.

On the back of the helmet, we added the Comedian’s sinister laughter. Using ghosted airbrush techniques, we painted a faint image of the Comedian’s face behind the “HaHaHa” text, creating a haunting, layered effect. This touch gave the helmet depth and tied the design to the dark, sarcastic tone of the character. Every detail of this custom airbrushed street helmet was designed to reflect the gritty world of Watchmen while staying sleek and eye-catching.

Bill also wanted the helmet to feel personal, so we incorporated some of his favorite sayings into the design. These phrases were airbrushed in a subtle, shadowy style to blend with the overall theme. The result was a custom painted street helmet that felt as unique as Bill’s personality. It wasn’t just about the art—it was about creating a helmet that told a story.  OOOOHHHH Kathy.  and what an effin STORY it became did it not…

The bold colors and sharp lines made this street bike custom painted helmet stand out from anything else on the road. We used high-quality paints and finishes to ensure that the design was as durable as it was detailed. The glossy finish brought out the vivid reds and yellows of the smiley face, while the ghosted elements added a mysterious, textured look.

When the helmet was finished, Bill couldn’t wait to see it. His reaction made all the hard work worth it. He was thrilled with how the custom painted helmet captured the Comedian’s essence while adding his own personal touches. The helmet became an extension of his love for Watchmen and his passion for riding, and we painted dozens of other things in the years after…

This custom painted helmet is what started it all.  Aaron. You are missed brother.  Everywhere Bill went, people stopped to admire the intricate design and bold theme. The combination of the Comedian’s logo, the dripping blood, and the ghosted imagery made this custom painted streetbike helmet one-of-a-kind, but just the start to his crazy ideas…

Every helmet is an opportunity to create something unique and personal. Whether it’s a tribute to a favorite character or a reflection of someone’s personality, custom painted helmets allow riders to stand out and express themselves. Bill’s custom Watchmen helmet was no exception—it was custom helmet airbrushing that showcased creativity, precision, and a Wild Bill personality.

In the end, this Watchmen themed airbrushed helmet wasn’t just about art—it was about bringing a vision to life. Bill’s idea, combined with our skills in helmet airbrushing, resulted in a helmet that was as bold and unforgettable as the Comedian himself. From the iconic smiley face to the ghosted laughter, every detail of this custom painted helmet told a story. It’s a helmet that will turn heads for years to come, both on and off the road. Unfortunately, I should have painted the face on the BACK of his helmet so he could see behind him… only had I foreseen that fateful day in his driveway, huh Kat…
