Troy Lee Designs Custom Painted Helmets
Scott Thompson, from Logan, UT, had me airbrush his third or fourth Troy Lee Designs Custom Painted Helmets, and it turned out slick. Scott wanted to keep the design bright and clean, much like his first custom painted TLD helmet, but with a few updates to make it unique. The key request was for bold neon colors, perfect for a standout look for snow cross.
We started the custom helmet painting process by incorporating a large nautical star, one of Scott’s signature design elements, which we placed prominently to make it a focal point. On the back of the helmet, we added his racing number in bold lettering, ensuring it flowed seamlessly with the overall graphics. For the right side, Scott asked for a specific swirl design. We made a few subtle tweaks to the original concept to better match the helmet’s shape and the overall style, keeping it cohesive while still meeting his vision and flowing.
The base colors and layout were straightforward compared to some of our more intricate custom painted helmets, but that simplicity allowed the neon to look super sharp to be honest, bold and bright for snow-cross. The bright colors stood out vividly against the darker tones, creating a striking contrast that made the helmet truly eye-catching. Using precise helmet airbrushing techniques, we achieved clean lines and gradients that gave the design a slick TLD finish.
While this helmet didn’t feature elaborate murals or intricate imagery, its clean and slick appearance made it special in its a stand out way that I recognize and appreciate over almost three decades of doing this sh**t… Sometimes, simplicity is what makes a design stand out the most. In fact, the photos of this custom painted Troy Lee Designs helmet turned out so sharp, I used it on my stupid business cards for over 17 years.
Snowcross riders like Scott need gear that not only protects but also makes a statement. A custom Troy Lee Designs helmet like this one achieves both. It’s a blend of style and function, with every detail designed to withstand the demands of high-speed snow-cross racing while looking great on the track. This helmet perfectly demonstrated how custom helmet airbrushing can take a rider’s vision and bring it to life in a way that feels personal and unique.
The helmet painting process for this project reinforced how important it is to listen to the customer’s input while adding an improved touch. Scott’s ideas guided the design, but the tweaks and adjustments made during the painting process gave it that extra level of gold that makes a custom painted Troy Lee Designs helmet memorable from the rest of the off the shelf garbage.
Looking back, this project was a highlight not because of its complexity but because of how clean and impactful the final design turned out. It was a reminder that custom painted helmets don’t always have to be over-the-top, with 200 hours into them to be memorable. Sometimes, it’s the clean lines, bold colors, and thoughtful placement of key elements that make the biggest impact. And a 20 to 30 hour paint job can sometimes be brighter and still say what you want it to in the snow. Or dirt. Or concrete. Or air… Whatever. you get it… Scott, it’s time for another custom painted TLD helmet… At least I’m guessin. You’ve got alot of beat up trophies now. Time for a new lid.
