Santino Ferrucci Wile E Coyote -Custom Painted Helmet
This Santino Ferrucci Wile E Coyote custom painted helmet was one of the wildest I’ve ever done for Santino. He needed a new custom painted auto racing helmet for the Chili Bowl race, and he said, “Let’s do a Wile E. Coyote theme.” That was it. No other directions other than use some blue. I knew this could be a wild one if I was allowed the time, as Santino lets me go all out with a basic topic and trusts me. Since I’ve done lots of custom painted helmets for him before, I knew his wild style. This one would become a one-of-a-kind custom painted Wile E Coyote helmet that stood out from the rest.
Instead of just putting a few simple pictures of Wile E. Coyote and the Roadrunner on the helmet, I decided to go all out. I wanted to create something no one has ever seen. I used all my best helmet painting tricks and spent way too many hours planning the layout. I started with holograms and added a deep Kandy blue color on top. It gave the Arai custom painted helmet a cool, sparkly, dancing look. The base of this custom Arai race helmet was already eye-catching.
Next came the characters. I used real scenes from the Looney Tunes cartoons. I sketched out Wile E. Coyote chasing the Roadrunner through the desert, just like in the shows. Every part of the helmet had action, color, and fun. It became a full airbrushed Looney Tunes themed helmet. I made sure the designs wrapped around the whole helmet in an interesting way, so no matter which side someone looked at, they would see something cool.
Santino’s base designs have often been asymmetrical, something I noticed of his before I started painting them, so I stuck with that. Gives his head a wilder style than a lot of the top Indy, Nascar, and Sprint car racers. The back of the helmet, thinking about the frustration of Wile E Coyote, and the Roadrunner always getting the best of him… I thought, how can I show that frustration in a fun and wild way that would make Santino laugh?… So I painted Wile E walking away from the Roadrunner, in his big Pimpchair, being surrounded by beautiful girls. Clearly showing the winner. And the loser… in a way that you can’t gasp and laugh at when you turn the helmet.
The Looney Tunes theme brought smiles to everyone who saw it, and the details made other painters wonder how it was even done. That’s what I love about custom helmet painting—you get to turn wild ideas into something real, and I always try to get my peers to even wonder WTF it was to accomplish what I did.
When Santino opened the box and saw his new custom painted helmet, his reaction was awesome, from his unboxing video. This custom painted Santino Ferrucci helmet was done with a style I felt was as wild as his style, and it fit his personality perfectly. Fast, fun, and a little crazy, at least in the proper world of older Indy and Nascar guys
This custom painted Looney Tunes helmet was one of my favorites. It showed how far you can go with helmet painting and airbrushing when the client trusts your creativity. With Santino’s wild style and my love for pushing the things that haven’t been done before, we pulled out a custom painted auto racing helmet that was totally unforgettable. I’ve been helmet painting for over 20 years, and this one is definitely high on my list of favorites. It was a blast to see finished and a true example of how cool a custom painted helmet can be when you let the ideas fly with no limits.
