Santino Ferrucci Indy 500 -Disco Custom Painted Helmet
One of my favorite athletes to custom paint helmets for is Santino Ferrucci. Whether it be IndyCar, NASCAR, or a dirt track racing custom painted helmet for him, He always gives me full freedom to try something new. So this Santino Ferrucci Indy 500 disco custom painted helmet was one of the most exciting ones with the wild ideas that I came up with. Custom helmet painting stays exciting for me even after all these years when I get the opportunity to push limits. I have painted many custom painted helmets for Santino, but this one was the first wild one. This one that he needed for the Indy 500 was destined to be a custom painted disco helmet that cameras popped off on.
When I asked Santino if he would go for a disco-themed custom painted Indy 500 helmet, he thought about it, and quickly said, “Yeah, let’s go disco.” That’s when the fun began. I wanted to paint a design on his Arai that no one had ever seen before on a custom painted Indycar helmet, or any other type of lid. This would be one of those custom Indy 500 helmets to always remember after it was reassembled.
Santino’s custom painted Arai revolved around the top, a blinding disco ball of this crazy holographic foil I had known about for years, but never knew how to incorporate. It looked like lights were flying off of it in all directions. This took a lot of careful custom helmet airbrushing to get just right, as well as placing everything strategically to flow together and cover.
Adding a dancing disco girl, a neon vinyl record, a roller-skating RollerGirl, and a Saturday Night Fever John Travolta to the back, I wanted this custom airbrushed helmet to feel like a freekin party. The colors were bold and bright—purple, gold, silver, pink, blue, neons, everything. Big gold mica flake from the beaches of San Diego for Santino’s name was another cool little spin. It looked amazing in the sun. This airbrushed disco themed helmet turned out to be one of those custom painted helmets that you can look at for a lot longer than you planned to.
Working with the guys at Troy Lee Designs, and the reason that I got the opportunity to work this project, they all were even confused at how it was done. Definitely one of the most unique custom painted auto racing helmets I’ve ever painted, and at the time, ever seen. Every part of the helmet was challenging, but worth it to see it in the end. The blinding disco ball, the wild theme, sparkles, the vector line art, turned it all into a disco Indy custom helmet masterpiece. It was not just another automotive custom helmet—it was a celebration on wheels.
Santino was seemed blown away with the final piece. When he opened the box and saw his custom Santino Ferrucci helmet with the wild disco theme, his face lit up. He said he loved it. That moment meant a lot to me seeing his helmet unboxing video. It showed that all the time I spent on helmet painting this Indy helmet and all detail work and hours paid off. This custom painted Santino Ferrucci helmet became one of my all-time favorites in the 20 years I’ve been doing this.
Custom painted Indy 500 helmets are very special because the race is so historic. Every driver to take Indy. That’s why I take custom helmet painting so seriously. Whether it’s a custom Indy race helmet, a custom painted disco helmet, or just a fun design for someone who loves racing, it always tells a story, or at least starts one. And with drivers like Santino who let me be creative, I get to make awesome custom painted helmets that people remember and get media attention.
