Austin Mack, an up-and-coming Indy racer from Warren, RI, wanted a patriotic Irish custom helmet, custom painted to showcase his Irish heritage while giving him a “lucky” edge on the track. He reached out for a design that would combine bold racing aesthetics with personal touches. Starting with a custom Bell helmet, specifically a Carbon Fiber Bell GP2, we used helmet airbrushing techniques to create a fast and Irish-American look.

The base of this custom painted auto helmet was left partially exposed to show off the sleek, dark weave of the carbon fiber material. By letting the carbon fiber shine through, especially in the pinstriping areas, we maintained a modern, high-tech feel that racers love. The combination of this detail with the bold colors made it a true custom painted carbon helmet that looks fast just sitting there.

For the main design, we focused on integrating the red, white, and blue elements of Austin’s racing team while tying in symbols of his Irish roots. Using precise custom helmet painting, we airbrushed these colors into dynamic stripes that seemed to flow with the speed of the helmet. The stripes curved perfectly to enhance the aerodynamic lines of the Bell GP2, ensuring it looked fast even when standing still.

On the back of this auto racing custom helmet, we added a unique Irish-inspired design. A flag/Ireland itself, symbolizing luck and Austin’s connection to Ireland. Around the silhouette, we used custom helmet airbrushing to create shadows and pinstriping, making it appear as if it was radiating good fortune. The design also featured intricate Celtic patterns woven into the background, giving the helmet a classic yet modern vibe.

To add even more depth to this custom painted racing helmet, we used metallic finishes and several gloss PPG Envirobase clear coats, color sanded in between coats.
