Kick Ass King Custom Helmet Painting

A surprise gift, the Kick Ass King custom helmet painting projoect,  from the Kapell sisters in Westport, CT, for their father, the Kick Ass KING’s birthday. The theme for this custom helmet painting was incredibly special—it needed to represent their family’s history, values, and love for exploration, as well as the company the godfather had built. Combining their ideas, we created a stunning custom family tree helmet that blended personal meaning with sharp, cool design.

The daughters shared that their father owned a prestigious charter company, Northwest Explorations, in Bellingham, WA. To honor that, we incorporated elements from the Pacific Northwest into this custom painted street helmet. Using helmet airbrushing, we painted detailed scenes of the northwest wilderness, including whales breaching. The company’s logo, meticulously recreated, tied the whole theme together, making this custom Explorations helmet truly unique.

The centerpiece of the design was the custom painted family tree helmet, which we airbrushed on the back. This tree wasn’t just any tree—it symbolized the family’s roots, values, and the lessons passed down through generations. Using rich earth tones, we added intricate details to the branches and roots, representing strength, connection, and growth. Hidden within the tree’s leaves were family names, making it even more personal.

To match the father’s Harley, the base color of the custom painted motorcycle helmet was a striking metallic orange and gold. This bold color not only stood out but also added a vibrant glow that shimmered in the sunlight. The tones of the helmet complemented the earthy elements perfectly, creating a harmonious blend of warmth and nature.

We didn’t stop there. To ensure every detail was flawless, we used custom helmet airbrushing techniques to add texture and depth. The scenes of the whales seemed to come alive, giving the helmet a dynamic, almost 3D appearance. The level of detail in this airbrushed helmet made it a standout piece that needed to be seen in person to fully appreciate.  The KA KING lettering I did in the Irish heritage font it called for, and is always a challenge, and honestly, a pain in the ass to the the celtic knot style lettering.  But it looks “Kick Ass” when it’s done…  AHHHH puns.

Working on this street bike custom painted helmet was a complex but rewarding process. Matching all the parts of the modular HJC IS-Max helmet required precision and attention to detail. Every panel had to align perfectly to create a seamless design when the helmet was assembled. Despite the challenge, the finished piece was as clean and polished as any custom painted helmets we’ve done.

The Kapell sisters wanted this gift to be a true reflection of their father’s personality and passions. Their input throughout the process helped us create a design that was meaningful and unique. When they saw the finished custom painted street bike helmet, they were thrilled. They couldn’t wait to present it to their dad and see his reaction.

On his birthday, their father was overjoyed. He said the helmet was pretty Kick Ass.  This custom airbrushed street helmet was given by the girls, I think as a symbol of family, love, and the adventures they’d shared as well as how much they appreciate their dad.   I with I would have done the same for mine.

This custom painted family tree helmet was pretty classy and cool once it was done.   But I tell you what, when I was working on that tiny tree and lettering, I was cursing the world with how much time it took, how many breaks I had to take, and how much hand painting it all was. But It’s not just about the hours in painting helmets; it’s about turning ideas into a reaction. This project showed how helmet painting can transform a some paint into an idea, into a gift, and give a shock to someone.   I think that’s pretty damn Kick Ass myself.
