Monster Energy Supercross Helmet

Another killer Monster Energy Supercross helmet complete…This custom painted MX helmet was a memorable one no doubt. Finished just in time for privateer McCale Hicks who needed something fast, bold, and matching team colors. I was really excited to get started on this Monster Energy custom helmet. When I get in some custom helmet painting, for Monster Energy Supercross helmets that I have to deliver, that’s pretty damn fun. Custom helmets – a classic part of how riders show up for Monster Energy Supercross every week…   It’s the first thing you notice while they are waiting for the gate to drop…

This custom painted motocross helmet started with a brand-new Bell Moto 10 helmet. McCale needed a team look match, but also had his own cool twist. We used TRU-BLU House of Kolor pearl, let some of the carbon fiber shell show through, and some of those sections gave the carbon a K5 kandy blue look, so it looked slick when the sun hit it. That’s one fun part of MX helmet painting—you get to mix bright colors, cool effects, and team vibes all in one helmet.

Of course, when you do a custom Monster helmet, you have to leave space for the Monster logos. We made sure to keep those easements black, clean and bold, with their classic black color and green claw logo. That way, the helmet was legitimate and approved for raceday.

The rest of the design was all about speed and style. McCale asked for a unique off-colored camo pattern, which made it stand out from other custom painted dirt helmets. I used helmet airbrushing techniques to blend the camo just right, with smooth fades and sharp lines. Every part of the helmet was designed to look fast—even when standing still. That’s helmet painting in an a i nutshell.

This airbrushed MX helmet as always, was prepped correctly to be tough too.  Lots of years of trial and error with finishing AND prepping, for the best possible durability and mirror show finish. High end eurethan paint and THE BEST PPG clearcoat to protect it during racing.  It may be total overkill, as dirt bike riders and Pro MXers need helmets that can take a hit and still look good, but you can stop that beating.  Most guys don’t use the High End Envirobase, as no one would know the difference, but I can’t stand not.   I got that from my crazy mom.    I saw that today, as I was building wooden flower boxes for her that no one would ever see but her…Always the reason I started with dirt bike custom painted helmets, it’s where I started when I was a teenager.    An MX track.

When it was done, this custom painted Monster Energy helmet had bright blues, deep and buried blue carbons, a sharp camo layout, and shiny effects from the sunlight. NASH and I delivered it just in time to Nissan stadium in Nashville, which is super close to where I live.  Seeing someone in person open a fresh box, that’s always awesome and never happens.   But to do it how this one was done….custom painted MX helmets —that was a cool morning worth getting up for early.

Designing custom painted helmets and executing them, seeing them opened and used, you can feel something.   A piece of history, a piece of appreciation of the dudes that started all of this.  I see riders feel proud, fast, and ready to go with fumes still gassing off their lids.   It’s kind of hard to explain. This Monster Energy helmet showed off McCale’s team pride and personal style. Whether it’s for a race, a ride, or just showing off, a custom painted motocross helmet, or custom street, or auto helmet, it can tell a story. And this one told a great story of where Mav has gotten and all the injuries.

Each custom painted helmet I do is one off, and no one in the world will ever have one like it… is a mix of color, passion, and performance. And that’s why I love helmet airbrushing when each person communicates to me the direction they want to take it…   When you’ve done it for as long as I have, and you can’t really be challenged much on the process, it’s actually the story that makes each piece exciting to me…    blah blah blah.    It’s just what makes custom painted helmets, and custom paintwork the coolest thing…   It’s perfectly under clearcoat, it tells a story, and it has no rules.
