Jack Skellington Nightmare Before Christmas Helmet
This specific custom painted helmet, a Shoei custom airbrushed into a Jack Skellington Nightmare Before Christmas helmet, was created for Andrew Rebenstorff of La Habra, CA, while he was deployed overseas serving our country. Andrew wanted something special for his street bike custom helmet, and being a huge fan of The Nightmare Before Christmas, he requested a design that captured the magic and spookiness of the movie for when he returned home. The result was the first custom airbrushed Jack Skellington helmet WITH quality perfection done on the exaggerated shield eye ports for safety (there’s a ton of way to do this incorrectly) and brought his vision to reallity.
The front of the helmet, Jack Skellington’s iconic face, instantly recognizable and makes you laugh when you see it on the street. Using helmet airbrushing, paint matching the face on the shield, blending it seamlessly into the design while ensuring the eye ports remained clear for safe riding. The details in Jack’s grin and wide eyes were precise, making it look as if he was going to Claymation you.
On the sides and back of this custom painted street bike helmet, we created a spooky forest scene straight out of Halloween Town. The twisted trees, dark shadows, and foggy details make the design feel immersive and eerie. The airbrushed forest stretches across both sides of the helmet, adding depth and atmosphere. The branches curve and twist, almost like they’re reaching out, pulling you into the world of The Nightmare Before Christmas.
In a clearing at the end of the forest on back, the beloved characters from the movie. Sally, Zero, Oogie Boogie, and the mischievous trio Lock, Shock, and Barrel all make an appearance as Andy requested. Each character was custom painted and pinstriped, capturing their likeness. The vibrant colors of the characters and spiral hill moon silhouette stand out beautifully against the darker tones of the forest, making them the perfect centerpiece of this custom painted Nightmare Before Christmas helmet, to fill in all the canvas on the rear, since Andrew wanted Jack’s face on the front…
As custom helmet painting goes, this custom painted Shoei helmet was not just about the visuals but also about creating a custom painted helmet that Andrew could treasure forever, and hopefully it will be a trophy once it’s retired. It’s a piece that reflects The Nightmare Before Christmas movie and the creativity that custom painted helmets can bring when you have a crazy ass idea. Anything can be custom painted. ANY THING. So that’s the cool part about it. You think it up, no matter how off the wall, ridiculous, or simple, or bold, or detailed, or abstract, or cartoonish, or realistic… I can paint that style. So there are NO rules.
Andrew’s custom Jack Skellington helmet is more than just a custom painted motorcycle helmet. It’s a way to express his personality and it’s a fun conversation piece while stopping for a beer with his sport bike. Whether he’s cruising around town or showing it off to friends, this helmet HAS to turn heads, like… “WTF did I just see?” with Double takes all day long… The combination of iconic imagery, high end helmet painting, and detailed helmet airbrushing made Andrew’s idea the beginning of a hell of a lot of copied Jack Skellington designs, that have been cheap and pissy quality. So SO easy to see from photos if you know what you’re looking for…
This custom airbrushed street helmet is a good example of how themed helmet ideas come to life. I’m not a huge fan of, “I want that character’s head to be MY head”, but with the custom painted and clear coated shield on this helmet, and making sure the eye ports were spaced and sized correctly for safely, this– “his head is my head” -layout, is one of FEW that I think is cool and not early 90’s white trash skull head style. So SOO many helmet painters ONLY do this style. Ironman. Spiderman. Ninja Turtles, etc. Can’t paint a graphic layout, which is easy, OR a realistic mural. BUT… you get what you pay for, and it’s easy to cut corners. I suppose most people don’t know the difference anyways… The mix of spooky and playful elements, along with the bold black-and-white palette of Jack Skellington’s face, makes this helmet a standout piece. It’s a testament to how custom helmet airbrushing can turn a simple helmet into a personal custom lid, and hopefully a wall trophy one day…
To airbrush this custom painted Jack Skellington helmet for Andrew while he was serving overseas was cool. To bring his vision to life and create something that he could look forward to using when he returned home is always a motivator for me.
