Illinois Fighting Illini Custom Helmet

This custom painted helmet was one of several projects we’ve done for Yamaha’s ACT agriculture program. Yamaha asked us to create custom painted helmets for several colleges as a thank-you gift for their involvement in the program. One of the helmets we worked on was for the University of Illinois, featuring an Illinois Fighting Illini custom helmet design. This helmet was a mix of bold colors, detailed patterns, and a lot of custom airbrushing and pinstriping.

For the base, we started with an HJC helmet. Using helmet airbrushing, we brought the Illinois Fighting Illini spirit to life. The school’s colors—orange and blue—were the foundation of the design. To make the helmet stand out, we added a feathered headdress layout that represented the school’s history and pride. The feathers flowed across the sides of the custom painted MX helmet, creating a bold and unique look.

One of the standout features of this custom painted dirt helmet was the triple stripe design. Just like the school’s football helmets, these stripes ran from the front to the back, adding a sporty touch. Pinstriping these lines took a steady hand and a lot of patience. The stripes had to be perfectly straight and clean, which was no easy task on the curved surface of the helmet. This detail made this custom painted MX helmet look sharp and professional.

The Yamaha and ACT logos were also included in the design. These logos were carefully airbrushed onto the left side. Using custom helmet airbrushing, we made sure the logos were clear and crisp. They blended seamlessly with the rest of the design, showing off the partnership between Yamaha and the University of Illinois.

This custom painted ATV helmet wasn’t just about looks; it was also about durability. Since it was made for off-road use, we used top-quality materials to ensure the paint job could handle rough conditions. The clear coat we applied added extra protection, making the colors pop while keeping the design safe from scratches and wear.

The helmet painting process for this project was both fun and challenging. One of the hardest parts was getting the feather layout just right. Each feather had to be detailed and spaced perfectly to create the right look. The bright orange and blue colors made the feathers stand out, but they also required multiple layers of paint to achieve the perfect shade combo. This part of the project pushed our skills to the limit, but the end result was worth it.

Another tricky part was airbrushing the helmet’s curved surface. Unlike flat canvases, helmets require extra care to ensure the design flows smoothly. The custom airbrushed MX helmet needed to look great from every angle, whether it was on display or being worn. This required precise planning and careful execution at every step.

Of all the custom painted dirt helmets we worked on for this project, the Illinois Fighting Illini design was one of the most challenging—and rewarding. The bold colors, intricate feather layout, and detailed logos came together to create a one-of-a-kind custom Illinois Fighting Illini helmet. This helmet not only represented the school’s pride but also showcased the quality and creativity that goes into custom helmet painting.

In the end, this airbrushed helmet was a big hit. Yamaha and the University of Illinois loved the finished product, and it was a great addition to the ACT agriculture program. Whether it’s for off-road adventures or showing off school spirit, this offroad custom painted helmet was designed to impress. It’s always exciting to take on projects like this and create custom painted helmets that are truly unique.
