Nigel Mansell Replica Helmet

This custom painted helmet was another fun custom painted F1 replica to paint. A Nigel Mansell custom painted helmet that we turned into a custom ski – snowboard helmet. Nigel Mansell the Formula 1 champion of the early 90’s, this design came from one of his most popular helmets from 1992. Santiago Perez, who is a big fan of Formula 1 custom painted helmets and helmet painting itself, asked us to paint a Nigel Mansell replica helmet. But instead of using a race helmet like Nigel wore, we had to turn the design into a custom ski helmet.

He chose a Kask helmet as the base, Santiago wanted this custom painted skiing helmet to look just like Nigel Mansell’s from 92 obviously, so we needed to include all the correct sponsor logos, just like the original. So we carefully placed and sized Camel, Labatt’s, and Canon logos—just like the ones from the 1992 season. These logos were big parts of the helmet design when it comes to the line layout, so we had to make sure they were placed and sized just right on this ski snow custom painted helmet.

Turning an F1 race helmet design into a custom ski helmet design takes a lot of planning. Race helmets are full-face and shaped very differently than snow helmets. So we had to think about where each piece of the design would be laid out. That’s part of what makes custom helmet painting challenging. You take an idea and change it to fit something new sometimes. But we still wanted people to see it and say, “That looks just like Nigel Mansell’s helmet.”  We used bold colors, strong lines, and perfect placement to make it happen.

Helmet painting, custom helmet airbrushing, whatever you want to label it as,  I can blend colors together and make fades that look smooth and fast. We used accurate Nigel Mansell, yellow, red, and blue—just like the original. This airbrushed snow helmet was going to be used out on snowy mountains, so we wanted it to stand out. As always using high end PPG clear coat, so the design will last a long time, even in snow and ice and sun fading..

One of the best parts of what I do and custom painted helmets, are that no two are exactly the same. Every custom painted helmet tells its own story. This one told the story of a racing champion, brought back to life in a cool new way. Santiago added this to his helmet collection, and it fit in perfectly with all of his other custom painted helmets.

Executing a custom painted helmet correctly like this obviously takes time, lots of hours, and I love when people ask for special designs like this because I get to learn more about racing history while also creating something brand new and classic and part of history. A Nigel Mansell replica helmet turned into a snow helmet? That’s not something you see every day, but with good custom helmet airbrushing and strong ideas, anything is possible, and it was just a kick ass idea.

So now, when Santiago goes skiing, he’ll be wearing a helmet that stands out on the slopes. His custom painted Nigel Mansell helmet will turn heads, and people will know it’s a custom one of a kind ski helmet.
