Day of the Dead Custom Helmet – Dean Lucas

Creating Dean Lucas’s Day of the Dead custom painted helmet was a wild one. Dean, a pro mountain biker, approached Mark with a unique idea for his helmet—a Day of the Dead custom helmet. He wanted the design to feature bold, vibrant colors and intricate details that captured the spirit of this beautiful Mexican tradition. While Dean had a clear vision for the theme, he gave me plenty of freedom to add my own artistic touches, which made this custom helmet painting both fun and rewarding.

The design of this Dean Lucas helmet was inspired by the traditional elements of Día de los Muertos. I incorporated colorful sugar skulls, marigold flowers, and decorative patterns, all airbrushed with precision to make the helmet stand out. Using custom helmet airbrushing techniques, I brought these details to life, making sure every element popped with color and vibrancy. The skulls had bright eyes and intricate floral patterns, and the marigolds were shaded to look like they were glowing under the sun.

The day of the dead custom painted helmet also included some special elements unique to Dean. He wanted the design to reflect his personality and love for BMX, so I added subtle BMX-inspired graphics in the background. This tied the custom BMX helmet design back to his sport while keeping the focus on the Day of the Dead theme. Combining tradition with Dean’s individuality made the helmet truly one-of-a-kind.

One of the biggest challenges with this airbrushed helmet was balancing the intricate details with the bold colors. The Day of the Dead theme calls for a lot of vibrant hues—reds, yellows, greens, and blues—but I wanted to make sure the design didn’t feel overwhelming. By using shading and layering techniques during the helmet airbrushing process, I was able to create depth and dimension, allowing each element to stand out without competing for attention.

Dean was thrilled with the final result of his Dean Lucas custom helmet. The sugar skulls, flowers, and patterns came together beautifully, and the metallic accents added an extra layer of brilliance under the sunlight. Seeing his reaction when he first put on the day of the dead custom painted helmet was a great moment. It’s always rewarding to see someone’s vision come to life and exceed their expectations.

This project reminded me why I love working on custom painted helmets. Each design tells a story, and the collaboration with the person wearing it makes the process so special. Dean’s enthusiasm for the Day of the Dead theme and his trust in my creative abilities allowed me to create a design that was both meaningful and visually stunning. The intricate details and bold colors of the Dean Lucas’s Day of the Dead custom painted helmet made it one of my favorite projects to date.

After finishing the custom BMX helmet, manufactured by Troy Lee Designs,  I made sure to add a ton of clear coat, chopping it down between, to protect the design and give it a polished, glossy finish. This not only made the colors pop but also ensured the helmet could withstand the wear and tear of BMX riding. The finished product was more than just a piece of safety gear—it was a work of art that reflected Dean’s personality and the rich cultural tradition of Día de los Muertos.

Working on projects like the Dean Lucas helmet is always a highlight for me as an artist. It’s a chance to combine my passion for helmet painting with someone else’s vision, creating something truly unique and special. This day of the dead custom painted helmet will always stand out as one of my favorite designs, not just because of how it looked but because of the story and collaboration behind it. I’m grateful to have been part of bringing Dean’s idea to life and creating a helmet that he’ll treasure for years to come.
