Custom Florida Gators Beer Keg

This Custom Florida Gators Beer Keg project began with an old Anheuser-Busch beer keg that had clearly lived a pretty hard life. It wasn’t shiny, new, or particularly impressive when it first arrived. In fact, it looked more like something that belonged in a scrap pile than something that would eventually become the centerpiece of a Florida Gators pool.
But that’s exactly what made the project interesting.  The idea was to take a beat-up, well-used beer keg and turn it into something completely unexpected—a custom painted Florida Gators fountain that would become part artwork, part conversation piece, and part working feature for an alligator’s pool. It was a project that required quite a bit of preparation before any paint or custom airbrushing could even begin.

The condition of the keg was one of the biggest challenges. After years of use, it had accumulated plenty of dirt, grime, scratches, oxidation, and general wear. Before custom painting could begin, the entire surface needed to be cleaned, stripped, polished, and prepared.  That prep took a ton of hours…
With a project like this, the final paint job is only going to be as good as the surface underneath it. There is no shortcut around good prep work, especially when you’re taking an old piece of equipment and trying to turn it into a finished work of art.  The keg had to be brought back to a condition where it was actually worth investing the time and materials required for a custom paint job. Hours went into cleaning and polishing the metal, removing years of accumulated abuse, and getting the surface ready to accept the artwork.

There was another major part of the project before the custom painting could begin. The keg needed to be modified to function as a fountain.   This wasn’t going to be a decorative keg sitting in the corner. The finished piece would actually help circulate and rotate the water in a Florida Gators-themed pool. That meant the fountain components and modifications had to be worked out before the artwork could be finalized.  Once the mechanical modifications were completed, the design could be planned around the shape of the keg and the fountain itself.

This is one of the things that makes custom painting projects like this so enjoyable. The object you’re painting doesn’t necessarily start out as a traditional piece of artwork. Sometimes the canvas is a motorcycle part, a helmet, an automotive component, a piece of machinery—or, in this case, an old beer keg being turned into a pool fountain.    The challenge is figuring out how to make the artwork work with the object.

With the preparation and modifications finished, it was time to start laying out the Florida Gators design.  The color palette was built around the recognizable combination of orange, green, blue, and white. Those colors became the foundation for the graphics, logos, and artwork covering the keg.  The goal wasn’t simply to paint a logo on the side and call it finished. The idea was to create something bold, colorful, and fun that would fit naturally into the pool environment while making the old keg almost unrecognizable from what it had been originally.  Custom airbrushing allowed the different elements of the design to flow together rather than looking like separate decals or stickers. The artwork could follow the curves of the keg, giving the finished piece a more integrated appearance.  The result is a much more elaborate interpretation of the Florida Gators theme—one that turns a piece of old equipment into a colorful piece of functional art.

Once the painting and airbrushing were complete, all of the individual pieces finally came together. The orange, green, blue, and white graphics transformed the keg into a wild Florida Gators-themed fountain.   The finished piece is colorful, unusual, and impossible to mistake for an ordinary beer keg. It also has the kind of character that comes from starting with something old and giving it a completely unexpected second life.

And apparently, Julia Stiles—the painting Gator—approves.

The piece was created to be fun. It wasn’t intended to be a conservative or understated decoration. The whole project was about taking something unusual and making it into something even more unusual

From the hours of cleaning and polishing to the mechanical modifications, design work, custom painting, and airbrushing, every stage contributed to the final result. The finished fountain is a combination of repurposed equipment and custom artwork, with the Florida Gators theme tying everything together.Most importantly, it turned out to be exactly what the project was supposed to be: super cool, completely different, and a whole lot of fun. What started as a heavily used Anheuser-Busch beer keg now has a second life as a custom painted Florida Gators fountain, helping circulate the water in the pool and providing a centerpiece that gets noticed.
