Custom Airbrushed 1911 Pistols – Carmichael, Hart

Attending the 75th annual Sturgis Rally was an unforgettable experience, made even more special by the opportunity to contribute to the event with custom-painted helmets. When the City of Sturgis reached out, their request to create custom-painted gun cases for the legendary racers attending the rally became the foundation for a unique artistic challenge. These racers, including Grand Marshal Carey Hart, alongside icons like Ricky Carmichael, Doug Henry, Eric and Ben Bostrom, and Micky Dymond, were each presented with a .45 Springfield 1911 firearm. To complement these remarkable gifts, we designed and painted personalized gun cases that were as legendary as the racers themselves.

Custom helmet painting shares a lot in common with this project. Each case was tailored to reflect the personality and achievements of its recipient. Much like with custom-painted helmets, the process began with a focus on the individual details that would make each piece unique. Each case featured the racer’s name, number, and the logo of their business on the inside cover, while the 75th annual Sturgis Rally logo adorned the outside. The precision and attention to detail required for this project were akin to the art of helmet painting—transforming functional items into cherished mementos. These custom-painted pieces were more than just accessories; they were personal tributes that celebrated the legacy of each racer and their contributions to motorsports.

The rally itself was an amazing opportunity to meet and interact with these racing legends, individuals I had admired since childhood. Just as custom helmet painting often connects me to the stories and personalities of the athletes I work with, this project allowed me to connect with these icons on a personal level. The evening pub crawl provided a chance to share stories, laughs, and memories with the racers, making the experience even more memorable.

Custom-painted helmets and similar projects like these gun cases demonstrate the powerful intersection of artistry and functionality. Whether it’s a helmet designed to reflect the personality of a BMX rider or a gun case tailored for a racing legend, the goal is always the same: to create something that goes beyond its practical use to tell a story and celebrate individuality. The 75th annual Sturgis Rally provided the perfect platform to showcase this philosophy, as the custom-painted gun cases became lasting symbols of the event and the camaraderie it fostered.

The experience underscored the importance of art in capturing meaningful moments and honoring personal achievements. Much like a custom-painted helmet that represents an athlete’s journey or passion, these gun cases reflected the unique legacy of each racer. It was an honor to be part of such a historic event and to contribute to its success through my craft. The Sturgis Rally, with its mix of tradition, adrenaline, and celebration, remains one of the highlights of my career, and the friendships and memories formed there will always hold a special place in my heart.
